  • Ashigaru footsoldiers

Found this (from Siebold around 1852) while on my web travels.

Very cool Piers! It's in Dutch, which is kind of natural, but there ae also German bits in it...? Awesome!

I once heard a story that the Japanese authorities in Nagasaki were suspicious of Siebold. One of the Japanese enclave's Dutch scholars had said that his Dutch sounded strange, and they demanded to know the truth.
"Oh, yes, terrible, we agree," replied the Dutch, "but he is from the mountains of Holland, you see."

Nice stuff with a lot of illustrations.
I feel that the matchlocks carried by the ashigaru looks quite ”thin”. Actually, the ashigaru themselves looks like they need a nice dinner or two.

Agreed! They certainly need something! (one three-barrel gun there?)

PS Just bought one of the shoulder-carried 'chabento' tea boxes illustrated on p.95.

I usually spot everything worth seeing in a picture, but I missed that three barrel-gun
            Your new Chabento sounds interesting...
